West Ham United 0-0 Arsenal - Player Ratings

Deadlocked

West Ham picked up another valuable point as they drew 0-0 with Arsenal at the London Stadium as Arsenal failed to improve their away record in the Premier League this season.

West Ham nearly took the lead early in the first half, but Marko Arnautovic's header was rightly chalked off for offside, much to the disappointment of the Hammers fans. Arsenal came close too when a low strike from Iwobi hit the post in the first half.

The second half lacked many chances, as Arsenal failed to break down West Ham's solid defensive unit. And it could have easily been West Ham who took all three points, as Javier Hernandez had a shot strike the crossbar in the late stages. But the points would eventually be shared.

Here are the player ratings from yesterdays match:

West Ham

West Ham United v Arsenal - Premier League
Moyes seems to have started on a high

Adrian – 7

Despite Arsenal’s possession and shots tally, none of their efforts was enough to beat Adrian. None of his saves was magnificent, but he has kept a second clean sheet in a row, both against top five sides from last season.

Pablo Zabaleta – 6

Zabaleta had a difficult time dealing with Maitland-Niles getting in behind him and putting in lots of crosses throughout. He defended well at other times, but he was one of West Ham’s worst performers.

Winston Reid – 7

Reid defended solidly in West Ham’s new back five formation. He stayed switched on and made sure his team would get a clean sheet.

Angelo Ogbonna – 8

Man of the match has to be given to Ogbonna. The Italian defended brilliantly all evening and made lots of great tackles and put Giroud off in the box.

Aaron Cresswell – 7

Cresswell, once again being used on the left side of a back three, defended brilliantly. The Englishman offers assurance on the ball as he is a natural full-back and also defends brilliantly, always remaining focused.

Arthur Masuaku – 7

Masuaku has been excellent in his last two games before tonight and continued that form tonight. This time, he was not as good going forward, but he showed a defensive side not many people thought he had, nullifying any threat from Bellerin for 90 minutes.

Mark Noble – 6

Noble nearly got an assist in the dying moments when he played a perfect reverse pass to Chicharito, only for his effort to crash against the crossbar. The Englishman saw very little of the ball but defended extremely well in midfield.

Pedro Obiang – 6

Obiang, like Noble, did not see much of the ball due to Arsenal’s dominance, but he shifted across the midfield well and made sure Arsenal would not score from midfield.

Marko Arnautovic – 6

Arnautovic worked his socks off, something that many people thought he never had in him, but offered very little in attacking positions. He scored a great header but was flagged for offside, and that seemed to be characteristic of his night, being caught offside on four occasions.

Manuel Lanzini – 6

Due to West Ham's lack of possession, it was a difficult night for Lanzini, where he mostly had to defend. He nearly won his side a penalty in the first half. But apart from that, he did not get into many attacking positions.

Michail Antonio – 6

Antonio held the ball up well and looked to threaten Arsenal with his pace early in the first half. However, as the game petered out, he dropped deeper and was eventually taken off for Hernandez.

Subs:

Javier Hernandez – N/A

Although Hernandez struck the bar with a minute left on the clock, he barely touched the ball otherwise in the final few minutes.

Arsenal

Wenger was looking to get back to winning ways after losing to Man United and drawing with Southampton

Petr Cech – 5

Cech continues to look like a shadow of his former years as the Chelsea number one. He looks slow with the ball at his feet and looks very weak when coming for crosses. Fortunately for him, he kept a clean sheet even after allowing Arnautovic a clear shot at an open goal after failing to punch the ball out of relevance.

Hector Bellerin – 6

Bellerin may not have offered a lot going forward, but defended very well against Masuaku who has had some joy recently against both Manchester City and Chelsea.

Laurent Koscielny – 5

Koscielny almost cost his team all 3 points with a horrific pass across goal with just a minute left of the 90. Luckily he was spared his blushes and kept a clean sheet, but the veteran still doesn’t look as solid as he used to be.

Nacho Monreal – 6

Playing in a back four at centre back - something he hasn’t done very often - Monreal put in a very solid performance. The Spaniard reads the play well and showed his strength despite his size.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 8

Making his first Premier League start, Maitland-Niles filled in brilliantly at left-back. Usually, for the U23’s, he is deployed as a central midfielder, but his opportunities in the first team have come at fullback. He put in some great deliveries, defended well and was one of Arsenal’s only positives from a poor result.

Granit Xhaka – 5

Once again, Xhaka failed to perform in midfield. His passing at times was sloppy, and he continues to look shaky when it comes to making tackles and defending.

Jack Wilshere – 8

Wilshere, making his first Arsenal start for 577 days, put in a very good performance in midfield. The Englishman turned West Ham’s midfield on numerous occasions and put on an excellent passing display.

Alex Iwobi – 7

Iwobi was by far Arsenal’s most creative player in the first half and looked the most likely to create a goal despite the small amount of space West Ham were affording to the Gunners. He slightly dropped off in the second half and was taken off but he put in a good performance on his return to the line-up.

Mesut Ozil – 6

Ozil looked to create all evening, but with West Ham putting in such a solid defensive display, the German simply couldn’t break them down with his passing.

Alexis Sanchez – 5

The Chilean has looked poor for weeks, and this was his worst performance yet. He was only taken off with eight minutes to go, but he should have been off much sooner.

Olivier Giroud – 5

The Frenchman did not have great service all evening, but he looked flat footed and struggled to link up as well as Lacazette has playing as Arsenal’s main striker all season. Given an opportunity after his equaliser at Southampton on Saturday, Giroud did not take advantage of it.

West Ham United v Arsenal - Premier League
Giroud failed to make any sort of impact

Subs:

Danny Welbeck – 5

Welbeck was introduced to be a game changer, but the Englishman failed to make any impact, apart from winning a freekick in the final seconds.

Alexandre Lacazette – N/A

It was hardly surprising that Lacazette didn’t start with some rotation expected. But to bring him on with just eight minutes to play at 0-0 was an interesting decision from Wenger. It proved costly as he had no time to score the decisive goal.
