What did you expect from the group of death? Of course, it’s called so for a reason. And before we go any further, let’s go four years back then when the Euros were held in Austria-Switzerland. In that tournament, we can find Group C which was composed of Italy, France, Netherlands and Romania.
Holland won all their three matches and Italy followed in second place, while France sat down at fourth, not winning a single match. So if we compare that condition to present time, I would like to predict Germany and Holland to pass this group of death. (It’s just my personal prediction though, please don’t take it seriously.)
But instead of discussing the Holland loss and that stupid greedy Robben last night, I will rather talk about the Germans. They, again, showed the spectators their field domination along with some fantastic defending.
And, so here it comes again. Two days, two superb headers. Gomez’s late header ensured Germany made a winning start. Plus, the fact that Ronaldo struggled to make an impact really pleased me.
No impact at all in the first half and according to my notes, Cristiano didn’t make a run with the ball till after ten minutes, a small fact that shows us the Real Madrid superstar just couldn’t move freely thanks to the tenacious Jerome Boateng, who played well last night.
Overall, Germany’s backline was excellent. Only captain Lahm disappointed me a little bit cause of Nani success to dribble past him on a number of occasions. But surely, you can’t doubt on his capability as the world’s best left back just from the small mistakes.
Then there’s Neuer, who drew powerful saves from both Ronaldo and Varela. Credit to the the defensive pairings too, Badstuber and Hummels. They both performed solidly at the back.
Well, the Germans are young and hungry. Under the command of Jogi Low, they obviously want to win this tournament, and I don’t see a reason why they can’t.
Group B is indeed the hardest group in this Euros. Yes, the Portuguese have one of the best players in the world in Cristiano, but I’m still pretty sure Holland are still the main threat.
