Ronaldo made a record 17th appearance in Portugal colours against Hungary as he became the most capped player at the Euros. It was also his 800th cap for club and country combined.

As a result, he moved one game ahead of former France defender Lilian Thuram and legendary Netherlands goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar who stand at 16 games each at the Euros.

Thuram, who was an integral part of France’s World Cup and Euro winning squads in 1998 and 2000 missed an opportunity to become the most capped Euro player in 2008 where he warmed the bench in France’s 2-0 loss to Italy in the group stages. He retired from international football after France exited that year’s Euros.

The Netherlands goalkeeping great, Edwin van der Sar played in four European Championships and reached at least the quarter-finals in each one of them. He is capped 130 times for Netherlands.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who now, has played 132 times for Portugal also broke the record in the Euros for the most capped Portugal player ever, overtaking Luis Figo.
