Everton 0-0 Liverpool: Player Ratings

Ings and Coleman
The standoff between Ings and Coleman was one of the only exciting things about this Merseyside derby

The Merseyside derby is usually filled with action, excitement, and intensity. However, with Liverpool keeping one eye on the Champions League clash against Manchester City on Tuesday, the match never got out of first gear with both teams failing to score or trouble the goalkeepers significantly.

Without Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, Liverpool looked toothless in attack and the usual pressing in midfield was also absent. Everton, on the other hand, didn't look too threatening themselves although they did have a couple of good chances in the end.

Without much ado, let us take a look at the player ratings for both Everton and Liverpool.

Everton

Everton v Liverpool - Premier League
Jordan Pickford and Jagielka did not have too much to worry about

Jordan Pickford - 8/10

The Everton goalkeeper had an extremely quiet evening. The front three of Danny Ings, Solanke and Mane hardly created any problems for the England international. However, Pickford was good whenever he was called upon, especially when he made a decent save from a Liverpool shot in the first half.

Seamus Coleman - 7/10

One of the rare bright sparks for Everton, Coleman worked tirelessly and looked up for the occasion. He was one of the few Everton players who actually got into the faces of the opposition.

Phil Jagielka - 6/10

The Everton captain had a satisfactory performance. He was pretty good at cutting out the Liverpool attacks though, like Pickford, his passing was a bit wayward at times.

Michael Keane - 7/10

The 25-year-old centre-back was pretty reliable throughout the match. Keane made some crucial tackles and interceptions in the first half.

Leighton Baines - 7/10

The left-back completely neutralised the threat of Ings and Clyne with his brilliant positioning and interceptions. He also put in a couple of good crosses which was not capitalised by the Everton attackers.

Morgan Schneiderlin - 5/10

In a game which was crying out for some action and initiative, Schneiderlin was a bit too passive and did not attempt the brave passes at all. Although he did not make too many errors in the match, the former Manchester United man could not cut open the resolute Liverpool defence.

Tom Davies - 5/10

The local lad tried hard to make an impact in this big game. Although Davies ran and tried tirelessly throughout his 79 minutes stay, he could not make much of an impact as he was shepherded excellently by the likes of Wijnaldum and Milner.

Everton v Liverpool - Premier League
Wayne Rooney did not have the best of evenings

Wayne Rooney - 4/10

Starting in his now customary midfield position, Wayne Rooney struggled to provide any kind of attacking impetus to Sam Allardyce's side. The boyhood Everton man had a frustrating outing and was taken off in the 57th minute.

Theo Walcott - 5/10

The former Arsenal winger was expected to cause Liverpool's makeshift left-back Ragnar Klavan some problems. However, the 29-year-old failed to trouble the Red's backline and was largely ineffective.

Yannick Bolasie - 6/10

The Congo international had another mixed outing for the Toffees. He unleashed a brilliant curling shot which was saved spectacularly by Karius in the first half. However, he misplaced a number of passes and was taken off in the 61st minute.

Cenk Tosun - 6/10

Everton's January signing had been in good form heading into the Merseyside derby, but, Tosun found it tough against Van Dijk and Lovren today. He, however, did not stop trying throughout the match and got into some good positions.

Substitutes

Idrissa Gueye - 5/10

Brought on for Wayne Rooney in the 57th minute, Gueye lost the ball on a couple of occasions with some loose passes.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin - 4/10

The 21-year-old England youngster came on in the 61st minute for Bolasie. Missed an excellent and easy chance in the dying stages of the game.

Beni Baningime - N/A

The 19-year-old midfielder came on in the 79th minute. He hardly had a kick of the ball in the 11 minutes he was on the pitch.

Liverpool

Karius save
Karius is slowly but surely starting to repay Jurgen Klopp's faith

Loris Karius - 8/10

The Liverpool goalkeeper pulled off a stunning save in the first half to deny Yannick Bolasie. He was also assured while collecting crosses and did not look flustered at all when put under pressure.

Ragnar Klavan - 6/10

Surprisingly playing at the left-back position, Klavan was pretty solid defensively, but he could not provide much support to Mane while attacking. A satisfactory performance by the Estonian.

Dejan Lovren - 6/10

The Croatian did not exert himself too much but was still pretty solid defensively. Liverpool will be thrilled that he got through the 90 minutes without picking any knock.

Virgil van Dijk - 7/10

The Dutch international's arrival has completely changed the Liverpool defence. Van Dijk put in his usual assured performance and was immense in the air as well.

Nathaniel Clyne - 6/10

Making his first start of the season, Nathaniel Clyne played the full 90 minutes. It was clear that he was a bit rusty although Klopp will be pleased that the England international stuck to his job and worked hard throughout the match.

Jordan Henderson - 6/10

A lot of 6s in this match. It was a pretty routine performance by the Liverpool captain. He was good in winning back possession but he struggled to break through the deep-lying Everton defence.

Everton v Liverpool - Premier League
James Milner put in another typically 'Milner' performance

James Milner - 8/10

Many people thought Milner would be rested for the Champions League clash against Manchester City. However, Klopp decided to start him and the 32-year-old did not disappoint. Good with the ball and excellent off it, Milner was taken off for a well-deserved rest in the 68th minute.

Georginio Wijnaldum - 6/10

The Dutch international was tidy with the ball and decent off it as well. However, there was nothing extraordinary in his performance and Klopp will be hoping that he steps up his game in the coming weeks.

Sadio Mane - 6/10

The only member of the terrific trio to start today, Mane's tricks and flicks did not quite come off today. He, however, tracked back well and helped in defence.

Danny Ings - 5/10

Most of the Liverpool fans were pleased to see Ings start tonight, but the forward struggled to have any kind of impact on the game from his unfamiliar position as a right winger.

Dominic Solanke - 5/10

Given a huge opportunity to impress by Jurgen Klopp, Dominic Solanke was guilty of missing quite a few gilt-edged chances for Liverpool. The youngster is still yet to open his account for the Reds and this performance would not have helped his confidence.

Substitutes

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - 7/10

Brought on for James Milner in the 68th minutes, the Ox immediately got some pace and intensity to the proceedings. Had a pretty good 22 odd minutes.

Roberto Firmino - N/A

Came on in the 74th minute for Mane. Did not get too much of an opportunity to make an impact.

Trent Alexander-Arnold - N/A

Came on in the 89th minute and hardly had a kick of the ball.
