FA slap Arsenal with £60,000 fine over transfer of Calum Chambers from Southampton

Calum Chambers was signed by Arsenal in 2014

The Football Association of England has fined Premier League giants Arsenal £60,000 for breaching football agent regulations when they signed defender Calum Chambers from Southampton, the official website confirmed. The FA have also suspended the player’s agent from all agency/intermediary activity for a period of three months for the same offence.

The 18-year-old moved to Emirates Stadium last year for a reported fee of £16 million. The governing body of football in England revealed in June that the Gunners had been charged and now the verdict is out. They have warned the club over their future conduct as a result of the transfer, which took place in July 2014.

Chambers’ agent, Alan Middleton, who was charged along with the club in June, has been slapped with £30,000 fine and suspended from all agency/intermediary activity for a period of three months for the same offence.

However, the FA has announced that the suspension will come into effect only if “he commits an offence contrary to the agents regulations or the FA’s regulations on working with intermediaries” within an 18-month frame after October 23.

FA’s statement on Arsenal and Chambers

An FA statement read: “Arsenal have been fined £60,000 and warned as to their future conduct after breaching The FA’s Football Agent Regulations. The charge was in relation to the transfer of Calum Chambers from Southampton to Arsenal on 26 July 2014.

“Authorised agent Alan Middleton has also been warned as to his future conduct and sanctioned for breaching The FA’s Football Agent Regulations in relation to the same matter. Mr Middleton has been fined £30,000 and suspended from all agency/intermediary activity for a period of three months.

“This suspension shall be suspended in its entirety for 18 months from 23 October 2015 and will not take effect unless he commits an offence contrary to the agents regulations or the FA’s regulations on working with intermediaries during this time.

“Arsenal admitted part of the breach but denied another, which was found not proven following an Independent Regulatory Commission. The charges against Mr Middleton, which he denied, were found proven.”

It hasn’t been going quite well for Chambers on the pitch this season. The former Southampton defender has found himself down the pecking order and is playing backup to teammates Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel Paulista for the centre-back position.

Since last season, he has made only 25 Premier League appearances for the North London club and he has earned only 3 caps for the senior England team so far.
