Fact File on the seven teenagers in the Manchester United pre-season squad

With big players like Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba and rest of the players who took part in 2018 World Cup being given extended holidays, Manchester United has called up 7 teenagers into the squad for the pre-season tour of the United States. Let's take a closer look at the 7 new kids in the Manchester United Block.


#1: Joshua Bohui

The 19-year old Centre forward started his career in Brentford at the age of 11, breaking through to the Bee's U-18 and later into U-21 sides before turning 18. The former England U17, eligible to play for both France and Ivory Coast after his Ivorian father, joined the Manchester United rooster after the then 17-year old impressive displays for the Bee's was spotted by the Manchester United scouts.

Then 17-year old, blessed with very high work-rate, devastating pace and clinical finishing ability, was signed after his impressing the scouts with 2 goals in 12 youth team appearances as he signed a three-year deal in August 2016, just in time to make the squad for the Otten's Cup, PSV annual youth friendly tournament

The rise of the attacker was very gradual as he scored 6 goals and registered 2 assists for the U-18 side in his first season with the club while also making 4 appearances and registering 2 assists for the U-23 side in the same season. The second season saw the English lad featuring more for the U-23 side as the then 18-year old made 16 appearances and registering a single assist while scoring 4 goals in 8 matches for the U-19 side helping him earn the callup for the pre-season squad.

#2 James Garner

The 17-year old midfielder was one of the stars for the U-18 side as they clinched the Premier League North champions. Birkenhead born lad started his football career in the Manchester-based side as he made through the U-8s and U-9s before representing the U-18 side 14 months ago.

The first full season for the midfielder saw him making 20 appearances for the U-18 Red Devil's team scoring 4 goals while assisting another 4 and even naming him captain on the occasion's when Lee O'Connor was not fit to play. The impressive display by the midfielder saw him being nominated at the end of the season for the Jimmy Murphy Young player of the year award by the present first team coach Kieran McKenna.

The 17-year old was a part of the England U-17 side that lost last year to eventual champions the Netherlands on penalties with him, Joel Garner, playing every minute of the tournament for England while captaining the side.

James Garner is a right-footed central midfielder adept at playing as a defensive midfielder also.

#3 Ethan Hamilton

One of the more familiar names in the teenagers to included in the pre-season squad, Ethan Hamilton has already had a taste of first-team match preparation for the Red Devils, making the matchday squad in place of Paul Pogba in a 2-0 victory over Huddersfield in the FA Cup. The Scottish lad started his footballing journey with the Hutchison Vale Boys Club before moving to the Manchester-based club in 2014 as a 16-year old.

Ethan Hamilton started his United journey making 6 appearances for the Red Devil's U18 team in the 2014/15 campaign scoring his first ever goal against Manchester City in January 2015. The season after saw him making 3 appearances for the U-19 side in the 2015/16 Uefa Youth League while also featuring more prominently for Paul McGuinness in the U18 team. The next year saw the Scottish born midfielder featuring more prominently for the side as he made 22 appearances scoring 8 goals and assisting 4 for the U-18 side in the 2016/17 season while also making 7 appearances for the U-23 side in the same season.

The 207/18 season saw Hamilton making 19 appearances and registering an assist in for the U-23 in the league while making 3 appearances and scoring 1 goal in the Premier League International Cup. He also made 8 appearances while scoring a goal for the U-19s in the UEFA Youth League, all culminating in Jose Mourinho calling the Scottish born lad into the match squad in place of Paul Pogba for the match against Huddersfield.

The 19-year old Edinburgh born lad normally plays in the left of a centre midfield but has been deployed as a centre-back and as a wing-back, earning him comparison with the United Legend Roy Keane.


#4 Mason Greenwood

The youngest member of the pre-season squad touring the United States, the 16-year old was another star along with fellow teammate Jame Garner in the side that won the Premier League North division. The Bradford born player started his career as an attacking midfielder or a 'No.10' before evolving into the clinical striker he has grown up to be.

Despite being eligible for the U-16s Greenwood was drafted into the U-18s appearing 18 times for the club and scoring a whopping 16 goals while registering 4 assist. In the ICGT tournament held last year, Mason Greenwood was adjudged the player of the tournament even though still being 16. He was also capped by the England U-17s making 6 appearances for the Three Lions helping them qualify for the U-17 Euro's.

The 16-year old is being dubbed as an even greater prospect than fellow teammates Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes prompting United to take the same approach they did with a certain Ryan Giggs nearly 30 years ago. Just like with Giggs Greenwood is kept away from the media's eye, even keeping in-house MUTV from taking any videos or interviews with the young prospect albeit some rare occasions. The volume of the 16-year old talent can be understood from the fact that he has kept out James Wilson, scorer of 3 premier league goals, from the pre-season squad.

Mason Greenwood is more than just a striker, he is blessed with immense pace as well as having a technical ability far surpassing his age group. The 16-year old is also equally good with both his feet and is capable of taking corners, free kicks and penalties with both of them.

#5 Ro-Shaun Williams

The 19-year old was tipped to make his United debut long before teammate Axel Tuanzebe made his debut. He was on the cusp of United debut in the 2016 season with Louis Van Gaal calling the then 17-year old twice to the Matchday squad, first against West Ham in the FA Cup on March 13 and next against rivals Liverpool in the Europa League on the 18th of March.

It all went downhill from then on for the Manchester-born lad, From the cusp of making an appearance for Louis Van Gaal, he went into absolute obscurity from the first team as he suffered several injuries in the 2016/17 with a severe shoulder injury that kept him out for nearly 6 months. The 19-year old showed immense determination to play and make his way into the pre-season squad after a good season for the reserves team.

Ro-Shaun Williams started his footballing career with Manchester United at the age of 9. He made his way into the U18 team at the age of 15 while making his U21 debut at the age of 16, injuries depriving him of an appearance in the first team squad earlier for the talented Mancunian. The 2015/16 season saw Williams making 5 appearances for the Red Devils in the UEFA Youth League and 3 appearances for the Three Lions in the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2015. The very next season saw him making 2 appearances for the U18 as well as 7 appearances for the U23 along with scoring his first goal for the reserves.

2017/18 season saw the 19-year old finally having a run in the reserves team as the centre-back made 17 appearances in the league alone while registering his first assist in the reserves. The Mancunian also made 5 appearances in the UEFA Youth League along with 2 appearances in the Premier League International Cup.

Ro-Shaun Williams is a powerful centre-back who likes to dominate the defence while also being one of the quickest and vocal centre-backs around, the 19-year old at the age of 15 had broken the 25-year old 100m school's record held by Olympic Gold medallist Darren Campbell by clocking 10.99 seconds.


#6 Tahith Chong

The shaggy hairstyle is the only common thing the young Dutch forward has in common with Belgian giant Marouane Fellaini. Tahith Chong was born in Willemstad the capital of the Dutch-Caribbean island of Curacao and started his footballing career on the famous Feyenoord Academy in Rotterdam before eventually moving on to the hallowed turf of Old Trafford in 2016.

The Dutch winger had a very bright start to his United career as he made 14 appearances in the league for the U18 side scoring 3 goals while recording a further 7 assists before sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury in January keeping him out of actions for 10 months with his stunning strike against Derby at Old Trafford the highlight of his first season.

The second season for the young Dutch prospect saw a player looking determined to succeed as he recovered from the horrendous cruciate ligament injury to take the field. after 300 days. The then 17-year old tore the U18 defences in just 7 matches that he played scoring 4 goals and earning him a spot with the U23's. Chong made 8 appearances for the reserves squad scoring 3 goals and registering an assist in the league while playing 1 match in the International Premier League Cup. Chong also made his UEFA Youth League debut going on to make 2 appearances for the Manchester-based side.

Tahith Chong is a left-footed player capable of playing from the centre, the left and right side with right winger being his specialised position. Chong is blessed with great strength and speed and is always ready to take on any opponents helping him make more chances for himself and his teammates. Another part of his game that might interest the Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho would be his high work rate and his willingness to track and cover his full-backs.

#7 Angel Gomes

The most famous name in the list of all the teenagers, Angel Gomes has been one of the most exciting players on the Manchester United roster. The 17-year old had made history by being the first Premier League player born after 2000 to make his debut for Manchester United when he substituted Manchester United legend and all-time leading scorer Wayne Rooney in the 88th minute in 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace.

The 2017 Jimmy Murphy Youth Team Player of the Year was born in Salford and joined the United Academy as a child, signing a formal contract at 13. He made his U18 appearance at the age of 14 and made his U23 appearance last year, at the age of 16.

The young lad, a family friend of former Red Devil Nani, started his United career coming on as a substitute on the final day of the 2014/15 season. The next season saw the England U17 international making more appearances for the U18 side while also bagging the Most Promising Player award at the Manchester United Premier Cup despite United finishing a poor 12th.

The 2016/17 season finally saw the young talent breaking into the U18 first XI, the teenager scored his first ever hattrick in 2016, becoming the youngest ever to do so since 2001 and the third youngest in the clubs history. The young attacking midfielder ended the 16/17 season with 20 appearances scoring 12 goals and registering 6 assist ending his wonderful season with his first ever Manchester United first team appearance coming on as an 88th-minute substitute to Wayne Rooney while also becoming the youngest ever winner of the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award.

The U-17 World Cup commitments in India, which England won, saw the young Gomes restricting his U18 appearances to just 6 scoring 3 and registering 1 assist in it in the last season. It also saw the Salford born lad make his first appearance for the reserves as he made 4 appearances for the Red Devils while also making his first UEFA Youth League debut scoring 2 goals in 7 appearances and ending the season with his second appearance for the Red Devils again coming on in the 88th minute in place of Marcus Rashford in 4-0 victory over Yeovil Town.

Angel Gomes is rated as one of the best prospects to come out of the United Academy since the Class of 92 and possesses an excellent passing range, ball control, astute positional sense and an eye for goal leading to a comparison with the Brazilian and Barcelona legend Ronaldinho.
