Good news for Football fans around the world. FIFA has finally decided to use goal-line technology at the upcoming 2014 World Cup in Brazil. As many as four companies are vying for the buying rights of the technology.
FIFA says it has already communicated to the companies which want their systems to be used at the Confederations Cup as well as next year’s World Cup.
In a way, the decision was on expected lines as FIFA’s rule-making body, International Football Association Board(IAFB), decided in July last year to approve goal-line technology in FIFA matches after two systems passed the set criteria.
Out of the two systems, one is the camera-based Hawk-Eye system and the other is GoalRef, which is based on ‘magnetic sensors’. Both were in use as recently as the Club World Cup played in Japan in December.
FIFA now says that two new systems have also matched their criteria and could soon be given licenses. They two new systems are believed to be of German origin.
FIFA stated that it wants to choose its goal-line system “by early April’, especially before Confederations Cup in June’13.
