FIFA’s TSG Report: Showcasing the quality of the tournament

The success of the FIFA U-17 World Cup, 2017 was phenomenal. It showed India as capable hosts. The same was echoed by FIFA’s Technical Study Group (TSG). The TSG finally published their report on the 29th of March, 2018. The TSG comprised of FIFA delegates which included former England defender Sol Campbell. The TSG was present in all matches at various venues. Their role was to analyse the technical and other developmental aspects of the game. The 44-page report observes the footballing trends that were on display in India, The last few pages of this report contains interviews with the coaches of all four semi-finalist teams (England, Spain, Brazil and Mali).

The Role of the Report in developing football

The FIFA U17 World Cup saw a record 1.35 million turnout at the tournament across all venues. The work of the TSG was immense as it had around 183 goals to analyse, a record for the maximum goals scored in any FIFA U17 World Cup. For the first time, there were detailed video analyses included in the TSG Report. These clips would help FIFA’s Coaching & Player Development Department in educating coaches from all around the world. The idea of the report was to make it more inclusive than exclusive.

“We wanted it to be available and easily accessible to youth coaches around the world to help them further develop their players. The re-structured TSG report has evolved to provide more insights and knowledge transfer of coaching experience with the in-depth interviews conducted with the semi-finalists coaches,” said Branimir Ujevic, FIFA Head of Coaching and Player Development.

Looking beyond the success of the U17 World Cup

The report is an attempt to help all the 211 member associations of FIFA and stakeholders develop the game. It is a reflection of the standard of the tournament that took place in India. Tournament director, Javier Ceppi, has been instrumental in India’s transformation in becoming capable to host a World Cup. He has voiced his support at various forums about India’s ability to host another youth World Cup in the future. The U17 World Cup saw England overturn a two-goal deficit to beat Spain 5-2 in an entertaining final. England’s young Lions swept the awards with Rhian Brewster taking the Golden Boot Award and Phil Foden being adjudged as the Golden Ball Winner. The next edition of the U17 World Cup will be hosted in Peru in 2019 while the U20 edition will be held in Poland.
