The beautiful game’s most beautiful event is upon us. The Football World Cup 2018 is just one week away and fans can’t contain their excitement on Twitter. With everyone rooting for their favourite team, the noise levels have hit full tilt even before the players have stepped onto the field.

Some of the biggest names in world football are set to take centre stage, and fans on Twitter can’t stop talking about them. So who are the most mentioned players on the platform so far?

One look at the Twitter XI, and it doesn’t take long to spot the usual suspects- Ronaldo, Messi and Neymar. Spain’s David de Gea is the most mentioned goalkeeper after having a stellar season where he grabbed the Premier League Golden Glove award.

In fact, Spain has the most mentions in the XI, with the likes of Iniesta, Ramos and Pique making the cut. Another standout name in the XI is Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, who finished as the PFA player of the year this season after a great run with Liverpool.
