So who were the best defenders in La Liga for the 2013-14 season? Is the list completely dominated by two of the biggest clubs in Spain, or are there representatives from other clubs? We will take a look at the top 5 defenders.
#5 Daniel Alves
Another member of the Barcelona side which could not win the title, Daniel Alves would make it into any list for the top defenders of the world. He dominates the right side of the Barcelona team on a regular basis with his pace, crossing ability and free-kick taking prowess . He scores at least four or five goals a season.
#4 Gerard Pique
Even though he did not have the brightest of seasons, he still comes fourth in this list with regard to past prowess and the skill he possesses. A composed defender who is strong in the air and the tackle, Pique is also adept at launching his team's attacks.
#3 Sergio Ramos

It was either him or Pique in this position, but Sergios better displays this year in the league and Champions League gives him the third spot. He has over the years, matured into a top class centre-half and is without doubt one of the best tacklers in world football.
#2 Diego Godin

Diego Godin, alongwith his teammate Miranda, have had an incredible season with Atletico Madrid proving to be absolute rocks in Simeones defense oriented side. Together , they formed the best defence in La Liga this season. On the decisive final day match against Barcelona, he scored the header that won Athletico the title.
#1 Joao Miranda

This man gets his place at first in this list due to his magnificent displays in the heart of the Athletic Madrid defence during the 2013-14 season. Relatively unknown at the start of the season, Miranda has blossomed into a fine defender under Diego Simeone. It was one of the best bargains for considering he was a free-transfer in January 2011 from Sao Paulo.
