Former Manchester United captain, Bryan Robson has always loved challenges and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is another hurdle he wants to cross.

Robson is raising funds for the football club’s charitable arm, the Manchester United Foundation that provides football training for people with disabilities and uses football to engage with youngsters in disadvantaged areas.

Robson said, “If you’re going to raise money for charity then it’s got to be a real challenge and not something you can easily do. That’s why climbing one of the tallest mountains in the world appealed to me.”

Located in Tanzania, Kilimanjaro stands at 5,895 metres and is the highest point on the African continent. A group of 25 climbers including former United team-mate Kevin Moran, members of Robson’s family and fans who raised £5,000 to take part, will join Robson for the expedition, leaving Manchester on 17 October.

The climb is expected to go on for 7 days after trekking along the Rongai Route through farmland, rainforest and high desert.

“Hiking in the mountains, with the chance of experiencing a problem with altitude sickness and the general physical demands that come with the trek, is going to be an enormous challenge,” Robson said. “In a funny way, that appeals to me more than something I know I can definitely do.

“The most important thing, though, is to complete the challenge and to raise as much money for charity as I possibly can.”
