Van Der Sar has a soft spot for his old club

Manchester United legend Edwin Van Der Sar has agreed to come out of retirement for a single appearance for his former club Noordwijk after the club requested him to play. The 45-year-old played for the amateur club in his early days where he was scouted by Louis Van Gaal’s Ajax.

The Dutchman was asked to keep for his old side after their regular stopper Mustafa Mare Zine suffered an injury. The club apparently did not have a replacement for their first choice and so decided to ask if their former player would consider coming out of retirement for one last stint.

Van Der Sar needed some convincing but he eventually agreed to do it. He is still well associated with the club and is a regular presence there according to Peter Vink who is the technical director at the club stating, “He still thinks warmly of the club and is here regularly“.

The former Ajax and United stopper did think about it before making his decision though. “After some deliberation he agreed to keep goal next Saturday against Jodan Boys. We assume that it is basically only for one game” said the director.

The club are obviously overjoyed at his acceptance to play and the director was also pleased with the good news saying,”We are thrilled that Edwin wants to help us in this way”.

The Dutch Football association gave Van der Sar special permission to feature for his old club against Jodan Boys for the one-off game.

Van Der Sar played for Noordwijk between 1985 and 1990 before he was signed by Ajax. The keeper is the highest ever capped player for the Netherlands.representing his country a record 130 times.

Manchester United play Liverpool in Europa League

Van Der Sar’s former side Manchester United have been pitted against eternal rivals Liverpool in the Europa league in the round of 16. This will be the first ever time the two giants will play each other in a European competition.

Both United and Liverpool are currently 6th and 7th in the league with only three points separating them. Their chances of Champions League qualification don't look promising this year with United three points behind Manchester City who have a game in hand. Liverpool have also had an indifferent season but three wins in a row have given Jurgen Klopp’s men confidence heading into the game against United
