England assistant coach Gary Neville revealed on Thursday that he has turned down several offers to start his managerial career in the last 18 months.

Former Manchester United defender Neville joined Roy Hodgson’s England backroom staff last year after working as a television pundit following his retirement in February 2011.

The 38-year-old was keen to work with Hodgson to further his managerial education after earning his UEFA coaching badges and he has become a trusted member of the England set-up.

However, Neville, who continues to work in television when not on England duty, has been willing to snub offers to become a manager because he enjoys his twin roles and is wary of the increasing trend for bosses to be sacked without being given time to make an impact

“I have been offered two or three roles in the last 18 months but it would not have been the right decision,” Neville told the Soccerex Conference in Manchester.

“I see a lot of people rush into coaching too quickly.

“In two years they are finished. There are a lot of crazy owners out there.”
