Three-time champions Germany finished off their 2010 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 3-2 win against Uruguay in the 3rd Place Match on Saturday.
German Fans
The young German team celebrated an entertaining style of football in the finals in South Africa and left many fans around the globe surprised by the spirited performance. Joachim Loew’s team was expected to reach the quarterfinals and German fans didn’t expect their side to be real contenders for the title prior to the tournament, although all of them were eagerly waiting for another World Cup title.
But the 4-0 trashing of Australia created a new hype in the heart of Europe and fans started to believe in their side. Germany got a setback against Serbia in the second group match, but came back strongly against Ghana. England and Argentina were trashed and the whole German nation was full of joy and created an atmosphere like 2006 when Germany hosted the finals! Streets full of celebrating fans and non-stop coverage in all media made the unthinkable possible.
But the semifinal match against Spain ended Germany’s hopes to clinch their fourth title and fans were down to earth with tears in their eyes. The Germans were quick to congratulate the great Spanish side and were proud of their own team with new stars like Schweinsteiger, Oezil, Mueller, Khedira and others.
The 3rd Place finish is considered as a great achivement by fans and the public, although the players still mourn the missed chance to win the title.
“We’re going home with a very good feeling,” said coach Loew. “Altogether, what we’ve achieved, we never would have expected it eight or nine months ago.”
“We were behind and we rallied, that shows the character of this team. I am very proud of this team although I have tears in one eye because we did not reach the final,” added Bastian Schweinsteiger.
The multi-cultural German team represents the new identity of the German nation and looks promises a bright future for German football.
