Gerrard might miss start of next season due to injury

Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson is riddled with doubts as to whether his captain will be fully fit in time for the home game against Moldova on September 6 and their colossal match away to Ukraine four days later.

Steven Gerrard had a shoulder operation before the end of the last campaign, and is now struggling to be fit for next season.

Gerrard, 30, went under the knife in a desperate attempt to be fit for his club’s pre-season matches, but had to miss out the recent friendlies with the Republic of Ireland and Brazil.

Given the pace of the recuperation process, it is highly unlikely that the player will play in either of England’s World Cup qualifier games.

Just when Liverpool thought they had enough to worry about, striker Daniel Sturridge also withdrew following an injury to the ankle while on international duty during the 1-1 draw against Ireland at Wembley last week.

He gets by with the help of a protective boot, and may even need an operation if his problem does not improve.
