Madrid, March 10 (IANS) Spanish La Liga strugglers Getafe took the decision to sack coach Luis Garcia Monday.

Garcia has paid the price for a record run of 12 games without a win which has seen Getafe slip from being possible contenders for a place in next season’s Europa League to becoming candidates for relegation, reports Xinhua.

The club from the south of Madrid is currently 15th in the table, just a point above the relegation zone after not winning a game since November 2013.

“It is a sad day for me and I hope with all of my heart that Getafe continue for another year in La Liga. I have been in charge for 113 games and I have given everything for Getafe,” said Garcia, who was in his third campaign at the club.

“The two first years were good and we have beaten big sides in the cup as well as enjoying matches when we have beaten Barcelona and Real Madrid. But this bad run has been the worst moment of my time here,” added the coach, who should have few problems in finding a new club for next season.

“One door closes and others open,” he added.

Former Getafe player Cosmin Contra will be the next coach of the club. The Rumanian defender, who was training Rumanian side Petrolul, will be presented as Garcia’s successor Tuesday and is expected to sign a contract until the end of June 2016.

Meanwhile, Getafe have signed former Granada goalkeeper Julio Cesar until the end of the season. The Brazilian born has been brought in to provide cover for Miguel Angel Moya, who is out for the rest of the season after damaging his knee ligaments.
