Girona manager Rubi has agreed to join Barcelona‘s coaching staff from next season, the Spanish champions confirmed on Friday.
“Joan Francesc Ferrer Sicilia, Rubi, will be an assistant of Tito Vilanova with a view to the 2013/14 season,” said a statement on the club’s website.
The 43-year-old led Girona to within two games of promotion to the Primera Divison for the first time in their history last season as they finished fourth in the Segunda Division and then qualified for the promotion playoff final before being beaten 4-0 on aggregate by Almeria.
Barca also confirmed that the appointment would not affect the role of Jordi Roura who will continue as Vilanova’s assistant manager.
Roura had to take a more senior role for a period last season as Vilanova missed three months of the campaign to travel to New York for cancer treatment.
However, Vilanova returned to manage the side towards the end of the campaign and has insisted that he feels fit enough to continue as boss next season.
