ATK and Mumbai City FC played out an exciting 2-2 draw in the Indian Super League tie in Kolkata on Saturday.
The hosts took the lead through Michael Soosairaj in the 38th minute. Pratik Chaudhari equalised for Mumbai City FC in the second-half. The visitors took the lead late in the game through substitute Serge Kevyn Angoue and thought they would be heading back home with all three points.
However, Mumbai City FC were denied maximum points by a Roy Krishna goal seconds before the full-time whistle. The result means ATK now are top of the table while Mumbai City stay in seventh position.
Here's a look at the hits and flops from the game.
#5 Hit: David Williams
The Australian striker was looking dangerous from the get go. Mumbai City had a better start but ATK soon took over the game and David Williams was the one leading from the front. He combined well with Javier Hernandez to create the first chance of the game for Michael Soosairaj which was not finished off.
David Williams had a few shots himself on goal. He gave a tough time to Shouvik Chakrabarty and Pratik Chowdhary in the Mumbai City defence. After ATK took the lead, Williams also dropped back to play the holding midfield role with Edu Garcia.
Williams and Roy Krishna were always looking dangerous keeping the Mumbai City defence on their toes. Their combined presence did not allow the Mumbai City full-backs in Souvik Chakrabarty and Subhasish Bose to advance up the pitch.
#4 Flop: Modou Sougou
Sougou, who scored a hat-trick last season in the same venue against ATK looked extremely average today. He was marked heavily by Anas Edathodika and Carl McHugh. Sougou missed a few sitters in the first half and was taking a bit too much of time to sort out his feet in front of goal. A few poor first touches let down Sougou time and again.
In the second-half, Sougou looked to drop down a little below to aid the substitute Serge Kevyn Angoue. Sougou was looking better as a provider for some time. However, after Mumbai City equalised in the second-half, Sougou was again asked to take up the striking role and started missing the chances again. Paulo Machado set him up on two occasions in the second-half which could have killed the game but Sougou missed both the chances.
#3 Hit: Paulo Machado
Paulo Machado was tasked with playing a more attacking role compared to his usual one in the midfield. He was paired up with Amine Chermiti and Mohamed Larbi to help out Modou Sougou and Diego Carlos. Machado put on a great shift throughout the 90 minutes.
He created several goalscoring chances for Modou Sougou and the substitute Serge Kevyn Angoue. However, both the strikers kept on missing the chances with poor finishes or lack of perfectly timed runs.
Machado had a few shots on goal himself after Diego Carlos was substituted early in the second half. His versatile nature helped Mumbai City FC to leap ahead in the game as the ATK defence were perplexed by the tricky role of Machado just in front of the midfield.
#2 Flop: Rowllin Borges
Rowllin Borges did not have a good outing today for the Islanders. Placed just ahead of the Mumbai City defence in a bid to cut off the attacking moves of ATK, Borges struggled for the entirety of 90 minutes. He managed to keep the formidable attacking line-up at bay in the initial few minutes but that was that. Edu Garcia had it easy in the rest of the game and won almost every duel with Rowllin Borges at the centre of the park.
Borges committed lots of fouls in the latter part of the game on Edu Garcia. The experienced campaigner struggled to keep possession and was found out giving away balls cheaply at the centre of the park helping ATK throughout the game. Javier Hernandez also troubled Rowllin Borges which made matters worse for the Goan-born midfielder.
#1 Hit: Roy Krishna
Roy Krishna carried on his fantastic form into the Mumbai City game as well. Krishna and David Williams always looked dangerous. He kept Amrinder Singh busy by going for goals from distance. Krishna looked to play a slightly withdrawn role in the first-half, just behind Williams but came up as the main striker in the second half. He kept Sarthak Golui and Pratik Chaudhari occupied at all times, thus leaving his other striking compatriots unmarked.
It was the Fijian himself, who stood up for ATK seconds after they conceded in stoppage time. He received a peach of a pass from Edu Garcia, turned and slot it home between the legs of Amrinder Singh to salvage a point for the hosts in a game which looked like a lost affair just before the full-time whistle.
