England Player Ratings

It's not coming home after all!
It's not coming home after all!

Jordan Pickford - 7/10

You have to feel for this man. Pickford produced two terrific stops in normal time and kept out two penalties in the shootouts too. Still not enough to help England win the championship.

Kyle Walker - 7/10

An assured defensive performance from Walker, who also threaded a few balls forward to spark attacks.

John Stones - 7/10

Stones, too, was calm and composed in defense and read the game brilliantly, making four clearances. He very nearly got a goal back too when his set-piece header flew narrowly over the bar.

Harry Maguire - 7.5/10

Another solid performance from Maguire, who timed his tackles to perfection and showed fine distribution of the ball too, before netting in the shootouts.

Kieran Trippier - 7.5/10

Trippier started the match with a wonderful cross for Shaw to thump home the opener and remained a big threat going forward for the remainder of the half, but his influence waned after the break and he was subbed off in the 73rd minute.

Kalvin Phillips - 7/10

What a tournament he's had! Phillips continued in the same vein tonight with another impressive game, never misplacing a pass and pushing Italy on the backfoot with his direct approach.

Declan Rice - 7.5/10

Excellent reading of the game and intercepted passes brilliantly to impede Italy's attacking movements, whilst fighting valiantly for midfield control with Jorginho.

Luke Shaw - 7/10

He gave England a dream start with a 117th-second opener, also his first international goal, but his crosses were wayward and he lost possession a staggering 26 times in the game.

Raheem Sterling - 6/10

England's hero so often in this tournament, Italy knew what a threat he carries and didn't let him have too much time or space to conjure anything meaningful.

Mason Mount - 7/10

Mount linked up nicely with Shaw to work a few openings in the first-half but faded as the match wore on. His passes also lacked precision.

Harry Kane - 8/10

No goals for Kane tonight but it would be wrong to suggest he had a bad game. Far from it. The striker's hold-up play was brilliant and he gave Chiellini all sorts of headaches before dispatching his penalty in the shootouts too.

Substitutes

Jordan Henderson - 6/10

He drew a foul off Emerson early on in extra-time to win England a free-kick.

Bukayo Saka - 5/10

Following his impressive display against Denmark in the semis, the fans weren't expecting this from him. Saka wasn't just poor in open play but to make matters worse, missed his penalty attempt too.

Jack Grealish - 5/10

He, too, couldn't influence the proceedings in any way as the match just went past him.

Marcus Rashford - N/A

The match was almost up when Rashford took to the field but had a chance to do something in the shootouts, but missed that opportunity too, executing a tame penalty attempt which richocheted off the post.

Jadon Sancho - N/A

Another big disappointment. Sancho is such a talented player, yet his spot-kick tonight was terrible. Donnarumma comfortably saved that one too.
