Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has claimed that Theo Walcott is now a club legend after his ’2-0? gesture to the Tottenham fans at the weekend.

Walcott held his fingers up to mimic the scoreline as he was carried past the Spurs fans on a stretcher after injuring his knee. Responding to the gesture, the supporters threw a barrage of items toward Walcott, mainly coins. At the time, the injury didn’t look serious but news broke last night that he will miss the next six months of action and the World Cup.

However, Wilshere has made a bold statement, branding his English teammate a ‘legend’ but played down the whole incident that nearly landed Walcott in trouble with the Football Association as ‘banter’.

“He’ll be an Arsenal legend now,” Wilshere told reporters following the 2-0 victory. “They love Theo already and this is only going to help him.

“[The Tottenham supporters] were giving it to him and he’s given a little bit back. I think people have got to look at it as banter.”

Arsenal progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup, thanks to goals from Santi Cazorla and Tomas Rosicky, where they will face Coventry at the Emirates.
