Jamie Carragher: Daniel Sturridge is England’s best attacking player

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has labelled Daniel Sturridge as “the perfect type” of striker for the modern game, telling LFC TV that the forward is “the best attacking player England have got.”

Sturridge scored 21 goals this season, but Carragher feels that his finishing ability is underappreciated.

“He’s a great finisher – people don’t talk about that enough,” said the former Liverpool defender.

“His finishing ability is second to none. He’s got pace, he’s got strength – he’s the modern striker. He can play wide, he can play off the front and he can play up top.

“The modern striker can’t just be someone who stays up front, looking to score a goal and that’s all he does. The modern player has got to move about and bring a lot more to his game.”

Sturridge will be looking to transfer his domestic form to the World stage this summer, having been named in England’s World Cup squad, but is vying with Wayne Rooney for the central striker role in Roy Hodgson’s 4-3-3 formation. England’s last friendly, against Denmark, saw Sturridge shunted to the wing for periods to accommodate Rooney, but Carragher believes the Liverpool man is England’s best attacking threat.

“I think Daniel Sturridge is the perfect type. I think, this season, Sturridge has been the best attacking player England have got.”

Sturridge converted 24.7% of his shots last season.
