Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen believes this season’s Premier League has a six-horse race for the title and has admitted that he did not expect to see Arsenal and Liverpool so high up the table.
The Belgian, who featured in Spurs’ 2-0 win at Villa Park on Sunday, has claimed that Liverpool and north London rivals, Arsenal, are amongst the six-strong party of teams fighting for the Premier League title.
“Before the beginning of the season, everybody would have said Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City and maybe us,” said the defender to the London Evening Standard.
“But now we see Arsenal at the top and Liverpool third and you have to take them as favourites as well. We have six favourites and Everton are doing very well, too.”
Spurs are sitting in fifth place, three points behind leaders Arsenal, after a decent start following an expensive summer transfer window.
This term, Spurs’ Belgian centre-back has won 83% of his tackles and an impressive 71% of his headed duels.
Since Luis Suarez’s return from his ban, he has scored three goals, created 6 chances getting one assist. He has also attempted to dribble 22 times in three Premier League appearances.
