Jose Mourinho has been heavily tipped to take over the managerial reigns at Manchester United from Louis van Gaal, and is the perfect man to take United to its soaring heights again, according to the former Portugal and Chelsea playmaker Deco. The current United manager has had a miserable season, not only failing to deliver on his promises of bringing the Premier League title to Old Trafford this season but also not being able to take United to the Champions League, finishing fifth in the league table.

Louis van Gaal has expressed his intention of staying at the club for one more year to see off his contract, but speculations regarding his sacking persist more than ever with the ex-Chelsea man’s shadow now looming large over the red half of Manchester.

Deco, who was a part of Mourinho’s Champions League winning Porto squad in 2004, feels that Manchester United should appoint the Portuguese manager to get back to winning ways.

“I don’t know if he’s going to United but, if it’s true, in my opinion, he is the right man for the job. In this moment United needs to bring back all its history and I think Mourinho is the perfect coach to train United,” he said.

We won everything we could with Mourinho: Deco

Mourinho announced himself to the world when he led Porto to Champions League victory in 2004, coincidentally knocking out the Red Devils on their way.

A star player of the squad, Deco, also discussed his time with Mourinho, "I worked with Mourinho when he was starting in football. At that time we had fantastic players and one young coach like Mourinho giving us everything he knows.”

"For us it was a fantastic moment because in that time I learned a lot. Not just me, me and the other players. We won everything we could. The memories are good and he was the best coach that I had. Our team, our generation at Porto was a fantastic experience."

Mourinho has had his eyes on the job since he was sacked by Chelsea in December, allegedly turning down offers from Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. He was reportedly on top of Ferguson’s list of potential successors but had already made up his mind about joining the Blues.

There have been mixed reactions among the Old Trafford faithful on the rumours surrounding the Portuguese, given his well-documented falling out with players and staff elsewhere, but the fact remains that he is a proven winner and might just prove to be the Talisman that the club desperately need.
