Kenny Dalglish: Sir Alex Ferguson “bitter” over missing out on Steven Gerrard

In his latest column for the Daily Mirror, former Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has questioned Sir Alex Ferguson regarding his comments on Steven Gerrard in his new autobiography.

Dalglish asked why Ferguson tried to sign Gerrard if he thought he was not a ‘top, top player’. The Scot also wonders whether Ferguson felt bitter after Gerrard rejected any move to Liverpool’s fierce rivals.

“Considering he tried to buy him, it’s a strange statement straight away. Maybe he’s bitter that Steven didn’t want to go.

“Ferguson must be the only person with any knowledge of football who does not regard Steven as a world-class player,” suggested Dalglish.

Ferguson caused mass debate following the release of his new autobiography, Alex Ferguson: My Autobiography, that featured a large number of harsh comments on former players and associates.

The comment on Steven Gerrard tipped the boat as many former professionals lept to the defence of Gerrard. Even Zinedine Zidane spoke in defence of the England captain.

Zidane said: ‘‘Alex Ferguson is obviously one of the most successful coaches the game has ever had. But I did find his comments about Steven Gerrard very strange. To say he is not a top player is wrong.’
