Kuranyi fires Dynamo to Alania win

Moscow - A Kevin Kuranyi double gave Dynamo Moscow a 2-0 win over newly-promoted Alania Vladikavkaz Saturday.

The former German international latched onto a long ball to lift it over onrushing goalkeeper Dmitry Khomych on 27 minutes.

The 30-year-old forward headed a second from an 85th-minute corner, taking his tally from a lean period to three in 12 games.

Dynamo’s sixth win of the season sees them join 10th-placed Amkar Perm on 18 points as Dan Petrescu’s side slowly recover from their worst start in Russian league history.

Alania put in a spirited performance but only seriously threatened Anton Shunin‘s goal in injury time, Zaurbek Pliev scuffing wide in front of an open goal.

They stretch a winless run to 10 games with their ninth defeat of the season and remain second-from-bottom, one point ahead of Mordovia Saransk.

Alania coach Vladimir Gazzaev submitted his resignation after Monday’s 2-0 home defeat to fellow strugglers FC Volga.

Club president Valery Gazzaev, his father, said it would be accepted once a replacement is found.
