La Liga: Records tumble as Real Madrid beat Getafe 4-1

Real Madrid were rampant as they beat Getafe 4-1

Cristiano Ronaldo & Real Madrid are synonymous with records, and the game against Getafe was quite noticeable for the amount of records that fell as Madrid racked up the goals. The last of the first half blitzkreig that saw Real thrash four past Getafe in 38 minutes was scored by Cristiano Ronaldo and was a notable goal, for various reasons.

The Ballon d’Or nominee has had a relatively poor season, compared to the incredible standards he set last season, yet he notched up his 10th league goal of the season with the fourth against Getafe. Only Neymar, with 14, and Luis Suarez, with 12 have outscored the Portuguese superstar.

Ronaldo’s goal also took his tally in La Liga to 235, thus moving him ahead of Hugo Sanchez in the all-time top-scoring list in La Liga. What continues to defy belief is the speed at which Ronaldo gets his goals – he has scored the third most goals in league history in 133 fewer games than Hugo Sanchez.

Ronaldo does have an unwanted record, and conspired to extend it today. He has scored only two of his last 96 direct free kicks. He took two free kicks today and hit the frame of the goal with one, while the other was saved by Getafe keeper Guaita.

Gareth Bale was far more fortunate with unwanted records, as he got an unwanted hoodoo off his back. The world’s most expensive player hadn’t scored in two consecutive games since 11 months (18th and 24th of January, vs Getafe and Cordoba). Bale would be especially relieved to score today.

Karim Benzema is another who would be relieved to have scored today; his success on the pitch serving as a distraction from his off-field troubles. Together with Bale and Ronaldo, the BBC trio hadn’t all scored in a La Liga match since April 5th 2015 (vs Granada at the Bernabeu).

The Bernabeu hasn’t seen 4 goals in a game since 15th September this year, when Real Madrid blanked Shaktar Donetsk 4-0 in the Champions League. Rafa Benitez would’ve been particularly pleased, as he experienced his biggest half-time lead in his managerial career (4-0). It’s a score that may not be particularly new to the Spaniard, as he’s been up 4-0 at half time a total of 8 times in his career.
