LaLiga 2017/2018, Team of the Week (Matchday 4): Borja Mayoral steps up for Real Madrid

Both Barcelona and Real Madrid ensured that they finished the weekend in winning ways, with the Blaugrana maintaining their 100% start to the season.

Elsewhere, however, there were plenty of performance to take note of from the length and breadth of LaLiga.

Here is this week's team of the week, consisting of the 11 players that we thought were the best this past weekend

Goalkeeper

#1 Vicente Guaita (Getafe)

The experienced shot-stopper had plenty to do against Barcelona, forcing the current league leaders to make very hard work of their trip to Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

His best save came in the form of diving full-stretch to deny a Lionel Messi free kick, and he had precisely no chance of saving either goal that Barca came up with late on.

Defenders

Alejandro Galvez

#2 Alvaro Odriozola (Real Sociedad)

The young wing-back was constantly on the front foot, looking to get forward on the overlap and cause problems for Real Madrid's Theo Hernandez.

But for the physicality of the Frenchman, he would have had plenty more luck in getting to the byline. His link-up play and pace were key to bringing Real Sociedad upfield in a tough game.

#3 Djene (Getafe)

Didn't give Luis Suarez much of a sniff in his side's 2-1 loss to Barcelona. If he were a little taller, there is no doubt that he would be seen as a central-defensive colossus in LaLiga.

Excellent in one-on-one situations, as well as physical enough to hold his own in aerial duels, Djene was a thorn in Barca's side offensively. He is a key part of Bordalas' unit.

#4 Ximo Navarro (Las Palmas)

After impressing on his league debut against Valencia, Ximo Navarro fell victim to Manolo Marquez choosing to chop and change things in his back four to try and find the right balanced.

Against Athletic Bilbao, he featured brilliantly once again, looking much more at home at centre back than his previous seasons spent at full-back. He reads the game well and isn't afraid to make a last-ditch intervention.

#5 Alejandro Galvez (Eibar)

Responsible for one of the most audacious goals of the weekend, as the Eibar defender started a move off himself, before proceeding to get in the box for the cross.

His thumping header was the key difference in Los Armeros' 1-0 win over Leganes, and he seemed to enjoy the combative and rainy nature of the contest at a damp Ipuarua.

Midfielders

#6 Samu Castillejo (Villarreal)

After last season was interrupted by plenty of niggling injuries for the ex-Malaga wide man, Samu Castillejo appears to be fighting fit and raring to impress in 2017/2018. Against Astana in midweek he starred for Villarreal, and he brought that momentum into the weekend.

Full of tricks, flicks and the confidence to beat players, the Spaniard looks to be set for a very entertaining season indeed. He can only improve as the understanding in Fran Escriba's front line develops.

#7 Andres Guardado (Real Betis)

The Mexico international is Quique Setien's go-to man in midfield under the new Betis regime, and has already got his eye in for the odd assist.

Joaquin's second goal for the home side against Deportivo was crafted by the ex-PSV midfielder, and he has returned to LaLiga with confidence and an assurance to his play.

#8 Jurado (Espanyol)

While Espanyol sat in deep and attempted to protect their 2-0 lead over Celta Vigo, Quique Sanchez Flores needed a way for his back four to have some respite. The away side dominated possession, with La Celeste sitting back and biding their time to break.

Jurado was a key asset for this role, with the ex-Watford wide man haring upfield with regularity holding possession. He bought his teammates time to regroup, as well as asking Celta's full-backs plenty of questions too.

#9 Rodrigo (Valencia)

After receiving his fair share of criticism across the current LaLiga season, despite it being just the early days of the Marcelino era at Mestalla, Rodrigo answered any doubters in the Valencian derby.

The Spanish striker was key in the build-up to his opening goal, which was an excellent header, and his link-up play and movement into both the channels and in behind were key to the away side's particular game plan on Saturday afternoon.

#10 Joaquin (Real Betis)

Joaquin had to wait 12 years between scoring braces in LaLiga, but it just might have been worth it.

His two goals against Deportivo helped Los Verdiblancos to a brilliant 2-1 win and a much-needed three points, with both finishes showing that he still has the nose required to sniff out the right areas in the opposition penalty areas to arrive in at the right time. The veteran has been a real threat when cutting in from out wide over the last two matchdays.

#11 Borja Mayoral (Real Madrid)

Many would have doubted that Borja Mayoral had the credentials to step up into the Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema-sized void up top for Real Madrid, but the young forward showed that Alvaro Morata might not be missed so dearly.

The 20-year-old striker popped up with an instinctive finish to make it 1-0 on the night against Real Sociedad, before a driving run and cross forced an own goal out of Kevin Rodrigues too.
