What's the story?

Barcelona captain Lionel Messi has added to his long list of records by becoming the player with the most wins at Real Madrid's home, the Santiago Bernabeu, in the 21st century.

In case you didn't know...

Barcelona not only earned the bragging rights on Saturday but also gave themselves a further boost in the race for the Spanish domestic title by registering a win over Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.

The victory marked their second Clasico win in four days as Los Blancos crashed out of the Copa del Rey following a loss to their Catalan rivals last Wednesday.

Ivan Rakitic scored the decisive goal for the league leaders last weekend in a game that was especially crucial for an out-of-form Real Madrid.

The win also helped the Blaugrana overtake Real Madrid's total Clasico wins (95) for the first time in 87 years.

The heart of the matter

With the victory last weekend, Messi became the player with the most wins against Los Blancos in the 21st century, boasting of 12 total wins so far.

According to the official Barcelona website, nine of those wins were achieved in LaLiga, two in the Spanish Cup and one in the UEFA Champions League.

Gerard Pique and Sergio Busquets trail the five-time Ballon d'Or winner with eleven wins each. Andres Iniesta and Dani Alves complete the top five with nine and eight wins respectively.

What's next?

Barcelona currently sit at the top of the table in LaLiga and will hope to further extend their lead over Atletico Madrid when they face Rayo Vallecano on Saturday.

In the meantime, they will turn their attention to the Supercopa de Catalunya where they will face Girona on Wednesday.
