Manchester United v Liverpool for Thomas Lemar

What’s the story?

Liverpool have made a stunning €80 million bid for Thomas Lemar according to the reliable L'Equipe. The French publication claims that Jurgen Klopp is keen on signing him and the Liverpool board have already submitted a bid.

Arsenal were the front runners for him this summer but Manchester United swooped in and were in the driver's seat. Arsene Wenger confirmed that the Gunners were interested in signing him but the Ligue 1 club were not interested in selling him.

Referring to Arsenal’s move for Lemar, Wenger said, It’s dead. Monaco have closed the door definitely because there are ongoing cases with Mbappe and Fabinho. They lost Mendy, Silva and Bakayoko so Monaco are at the stage where they have closed the door. We have the numbers and quality to deal with that.”

In case you didn’t know...

Arsenal have been chasing Thomas Lemar and Kylian Mbappe for a long time but have failed to agree a deal with AS Monaco. Meanwhile, Liverpool are on the hunt for a Philippe Coutinho replacement and are looking to snap up Thomas Lemar now!

The heart of the matter

Liverpool have made an offer of €72 million + €8 million as add-ons for Thomas Lemar according to L'Equipe. Get France Football News have also confirmed the news and added that AS Monaco have not yet responded to the offer.

What’s next?

AS Monaco will complete the deal for Kylian Mbappe before holding talks with any club for Lemar. Jose Mourinho is keen on signing him at any cost and the price for the midfielder will only go up.

Author’s Take

Thomas Lemar's summer has been an eventful one. He was close to joining Arsenal but then Manchester United stole the march on him.

AS Monaco have not bothered to negotiate a price for him as they are busy handling the Kylian Mbappe transfer not while they were busy with the transfers of Bernardo Silva, Benjamin Mendy, and Tiemoue Bakayoko before this.

Now that Liverpool are interested, it is mind-boggling for everyone right now. Where will Jurgen Klopp play him? Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are in sensational form right now and with Philippe Coutinho leaving, Klopp will have to play him as a CAM - a position he's not familiar with!

Lemar is a proper left midfielder and would is someone Jose Mourinho would love to have in his Manchester United.
