Liverpool legend John Aldridge: SAS strikes fear into opposition

Stoke City v Liverpool - Premier League

Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge celebrates with Luis Suarez

Liverpool legend John Aldridge has said that the striker partnership of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge are vital to the club’s top four hopes this season.

Suarez and Sturridge – nicknamed SAS – have scored 32 goals combined in the Premier League and it is for that reason that the Reds find themselves in fourth place and have occupied a spot inside the top four for most of the season.

Sturridge came off the substitutes bench at the weekend to change the game and lead Liverpool to a 5-3 win over Stoke City at the Britannia – their first win there since 1984.

“Having him back available for the second half of the season is a huge boost. Hopefully he can replicate the form he showed when he arrived from Chelsea last January,” said Aldridge.

“The pass for Suarez’s second goal on Sunday was brilliant. It was great awareness from Sturridge and he put it perfectly into his path.”

Sturridge’s goal took his tally to 10 for the season while Suarez’s double took him to a staggering 22 – nine clear of his nearest rival for the golden boot, Sergio Aguero.

He added: “We’re lucky to have two strikers who are so prolific in front of goal. It means we have the ability to win games even when we’re not at our best.

“Over the past few months teams have been putting men on Suarez thinking if they stop him they stop Liverpool.

“But what are they going to do now? We have two frontmen who strike fear into defenders and cause havoc.

“Their movement is clever and that enables them to find space all over the place.”

The win moved Liverpool back above Tottenham and Everton and into fourth place where they now sit one point clear of their Merseyside rivals.

‘SAS’ have scored 32 goals combined this season. That’s more than every team outside the top 7 in the Premier League.
