Liverpool red faced on transfers, but can still sign free agent Michael Owen

It was all talk and nothing more with Liverpool failing to land Andy Carroll‘s replacement, after the Liverpool no 9 was sent on loan to West Ham. It may haunt Liverpool for the rest of the season, as they only have two experienced strikers, Borini and Suarez along with an unexperienced striker, Morgan. A serious need was felt at Anfield to sign a box to box striker.

They had their sights on Daniel Sturridge and Clint Dempsey. Sturridge is said to have rejected Liverpool as he was looking for a permanent move not a loan deal, which Liverpool had offered. But it was more tragic in case of Clint Dempsey, who was interested in joining Liverpool. But it was not to be, as Liverpool could not meet up to the bid that Fulham had set for the player. This also reflected Liverpool’s financial condition, as the Liverpool owners did not raise funds for the player, who could have made a big difference to the squad who were keen for an out and out striker.It was an embarrassing situation for Liverpool and Brendan Rodgers. Had Rodgers been aware of such condition, he might have well not sent Andy Carroll to West Ham.

Instead, Tottenham reading the situation jumped into the deal and signed the player before the transfer window was shut. Once again, Tottenham stole one of Liverpool’s key target. Now, at the end of the day, Brendan Rodgers has only one option left – to sign Michael Owen, which could be a risky one too. But, Liverpool fans would say, something is better than nothing.

Though many experts would write him off, as he has been injury prone in recent times. He might no longer bear that pace, which defenders used to fear when he was in his youth scoring goals for both Liverpool and England. But, one thing is for sure, he has been one of the best goal poachers in the EPL history and that is what is required at present for the Liverpool football club – who can find the back of the net by being at the right place at the right time. The present team has good players but the problem lies in not finding the back of the net. Michael Owen could be a temporary fix, as his goal scoring ability goes hand to hand with his right leg.

But, the player’s fitness may remain to be the foremost concern. Brendan Rodgers can use the player sparingly and mostly as a substitute with 25-30 minutes to play else play the striker to give Suarez rest in some easy matches, only if possible. Owen for sure has that strength to go full throttle in those minutes to come up with a game changing performance. If players such as Suarez and Borini are injured during the season, there arises a need of an experienced striker. Michael Owen could be the right answer for Liverpool.

Brendan Rodgers can sign the player and see what he can offer in Liverpool’s plate. If he does not fit the bill, the Liverpool hierarchy can think of a good striker in the January transfer window. Give this lad some time, he may well reunite with Steven Gerrard and form one of the most lethal combination, which had once ruled Liverpool football club. It could just prove to be a sensible move for Liverpool, who are in desperate need for a goal scoring machine. Though, this machine may not have much power left in him, but Liverpool fans can inject some life into this player, who was once one a favourite Liverpool son.Who knows? We might as well see Michael Owen of the old.
