Reports: Liverpool interested in signing 27-year-old Roma midfielder

Burnley v Liverpool - Premier League
Liverpool fans might finally have some good news in the transfer market

What's the story?

Liverpool fans have been reeling from the loss of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona, but it seems like there could finally be some good news for the Reds as reports from Italian outlet Premium Sport claim that the Premier League giants are close to sealing a deal for Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman.

Strootman has struggled with fitness concerns throughout the last few seasons, but this season he has remained fit and made 24 appearances for the Giallorossi. Strootman could prove to be an ideal addition to the Liverpool midfield.

Premier League bound?

Strootman initially made a name for himself playing in the Dutch League for teams like Utrecht and PSV. Courted by Premier League giants like Manchester United in the past, Strootman made a move to Roma and soon established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Serie A.

With the Dutch international now 27, he is at the right age to finally make a move to the Premier League and could be the ideal addition to Jurgen Klopp's dynamic Liverpool side.

The heart of the matter

While Liverpool are desperately on the lookout for a long-term replacement for Coutinho, it should not be forgotten that Emre Can is also very likely to leave in the coming months. The German star has been vital for Jurgen Klopp's side this season and has often been a combative presence in the centre of the park for the Reds.

Strootman, who is a deep-lying playmaker might not be as combative as Can, but his definite quality on the ball will certainly add an extra dimension to Liverpool if the move does indeed come to fruition in the January transfer window.

Strootman is definitely one of the most elegant midfielders in world football.

Author's take

While Strootman has struggled with injuries in the last few seasons, there is no doubting his obvious quality. With reports stating that he could be available for as less as £30 million, Liverpool should not pass up the opportunity to sign the talented Dutch international.
