Liverpool sign Bayern Leverkusen midfielder Emre Can for £9.75 million

Emre Can has signed for Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen

Liverpool has completed the signing of midfielder Emre Can from Bayern Leverkusen for £9.75 million and manager Brendan Rodgers thinks the new signing will bring a lot of charisma and courage to the team.

The Merseyside club met the release clause of €12 million of the German-21 international but had to wait till the July 1 to finalise the details. Emre Can became the third Liverpool signing this summer after former Southampton duo Ricky Lambert and Adam Lallana move to the Anfield last week. Brendan Rodgers has set his sights on more signings irrespective of Suarez’s rumoured move to Barcelona.

The 20-year old said he was looking forward to playing for Liverpool.

"LFC is a great club and the fans are amongst the best in the world. I am looking forward to the first game and can't wait to step on the pitch for the first time at Anfield."

Speaking on Emre Can he said, “We have tracked his progress for some time and I have been impressed with his attitude and qualities when I have seen him play both in the German Bundesliga and the Champions League. He has many of the attributes we look for; charisma on the football pitch and courage to want the ball and make things happen.”

The Germany-21 international is of Turkish descent and has scored 4 goals in 39 games last season. A former Bayern Munich player, he starred in Leverkusen’s top-4 finish in the Bunesliga. Bayern Munich though had a buy-back clause in the contract but that did not apply to a sale outside of Germany.

Sami Hyypia, former Liverpool player and manager of Bayern Leverkusen was credited by Can with the progress he has made so far and the influence he has had on his Liverpool move.

“He helped me a lot. I came to Leverkusen as a very young player and didn’t have many Bundesliga games back then. I wasn’t well known.”

“He trusted in me, and because I performed well in training he gave me the opportunity to play and made me a starting player. I have to thank him a lot for his trust in me” he said with courtesy.
