Liverpool striker Danny Ings to miss rest of the season through injury

Danny Ings had made an impressive start to his Liverpool career

Jurgen Klopp has been dealt a major blow in his first week as Liverpool manager as striker Danny Ings gets himself injured in a training session. The 23-year-old is set to miss the rest of the season and his chances of playing in next summer’s UEFA Euro championships is in serious doubt reported The Guardian.

The forward injured himself when he twisted his knee during Liverpool’s first training session under new manager Klopp. He is said to have ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament which means that he will be out of action for a minimum of six months which all but rules him out of action this season. It has been a cruel blow for Ings as he had just broken into the national side during their Euro 2016 qualifiers.

The injury comes at the worst possible time on a personal note for Ings owing to his promising start at Liverpool. He was well on his way in guaranteeing a regular starting berth in the club’s line-up with three goals already so far from limited starts. The striker had earned a call-up to the England squad on the back of his impressive form and had made his debut as a substitute in England’s 3-0 win over Lithuania.

Danny Ings was signed this summer from relegated Burnley as a part of the club’s splurge in the transfer market earlier this year.

Liverpool’s continued injury woes

Liverpool are going through an injury crisis of sorts as this summer’s new recruits Cristian Benteke and Roberto Firmino have already been sidelined with injuries. Also promising left-back Joe Gomez has been ruled out for the rest of the season when he suffered a similar injury to Ings playing for the England under-21s in the 3-0 defeat to Kazakhstan.

This would mean that Sturridge remains as the only recognized striker available to Liverpool currently at least until the return of Benteke. With Sturridge himself prone to injuries as witnessed by his absence for a large part of last season and the start of this season, Jurgen Klopp has a lot to ponder over at the very start of his stint as Liverpool boss.

Talking to reporters about the injury situation at Anfield, the former Borussia Dortmund boss said, “Benteke and Firmino are on their way back.”

“They are back on the pitch but not team training. I do not know exactly when they come back but next week [it will be with the team] and then we can see how fit they are.”

The gaffer also had words of assurance for the injured young full-back Joe Gomez.

“We have to make a further diagnosis and we will see when he gets operated on but from this point on he can count the days until he comes back,” Klopp said.

“It was not the best day in his life but he is a young guy and I am pretty good at waiting for players, young players especially. This is his home and we will do everything to help him come back as soon as possible.”
