Liverpool have suffered a massive injury blow as striker Divock Origi will miss the remainder of the season due to an injury setback.

The Belgium international picked up an injury during his side's 4-0 victory over Everton in the Merseyside derby. The incident took place when the Toffees defender Ramiro Funes Mori's mistimed tackle five minutes into the second half forced the former Lille man to be stretchered off the field.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the latest scan shows that Origi has suffered a ligament damage and it is still not sure for how long he will on the sidelines. However, it is believed that he will not feature for the Reds this season.

The Anfield club made it to the semi-final of the Europa League after eliminating Borussia Dortmund in the previous round with Origi scoring in both the legs against the Bundesliga outfit. He was also on the scoresheet against Everton.

Liverpool face Villarreal in the semi-final of the Europa League on 29 April and 6 May. He will miss those key fixtures and his absence will be a big blow for the Premier League side in Europe's second-tier club competition.

Rafael Benitez will return to Anfield when his current side Newcastle United take on Liverpool this weekend. During the press conference for the league tie, Jurgen Klopp confirmed Origi's injury is serious, but refused to suggest that he will be out of action for the remainder of the 2015-16 campaign.

“I don’t want to really answer this question, but I can of course - it’s an injury and it’s serious," Klopp said, as quoted by Liverpool's official website.

“We will try everything, everything, [to make sure] the season is not over without taking any risks for the player. That’s how it is.

“I am long enough in this business to know we are all different, all individuals, so we don’t have to say any general things. We only have to work with him and then we will see what happens. It is the same with Emre Can and so on.

“As I said, we are all individuals. A long time ago, I had an ACL [injury] and played after four months, and nobody could believe it worked but I didn’t have a problem with it.

“Why should we say now his season is over when we still believe a little bit there can be a few games for him? We have to see.”
