Louis Van Gaal has confessed to have fiddled around a bit too much with regard to the team formations, and that could be the big reason why Manchester United are yet to give consistent performances in the Premier League so far.

The Red Devils played with a 4-1-4-1 formation in their 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday. This was the third different formation in 11 games of the Premier League thus far. Injuries to key players have also not helped the 63-year-old’s cause either.

“It's too much, I agree. But I'm looking for the balance and when you see the last four matches, we have had more balance because we haven't conceded many goals,” Van Gaal said.

Di Maria doesnt pass all the time: Van Gaal

Angel Di Maria’s role in the midfield is one of the Dutchman’s main worries at the moment and the former Netherlands manager feels that the Argentine hasn’t yet gotten used to the style of play in England. Di Maria has scored four goals, in three matches for United so far, but has struggled in recent matches.

"He has played in a very small space and he is a dribbler but sometimes you cannot dribble. You have to make it a pass game, and Di Maria is not a player who wants to give a pass every time he gets the ball,” he said.

"But in this case we needed that and not dribbles. Therefore he lost the ball a lot of times and that was not good for the balance of the team. Of course, we need to raise our level. It's a matter of time but it's also a matter of getting over a lot of injuries," he added.
