Louis van Gaal desperate to sign Arjen Robben for Manchester United, claims Dutch legend Bryan Roy

Netherlands' football team coach Louis van Gaal (R) speaks with Arjen Robben after a training session in Rio de Janeiro on June 14, 2014, the day after their first match victory by 5-1 against Spain in the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Netherlands and soon-to-be Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is desperate to bring Arjen Robben back to the Premier League and to Old Trafford with him, according to former Dutch international Bryan Roy.

Bayern Munich ace Robben has starred in the World Cup for the Netherlands so far, guiding them to top spot in Group B with a perfect three victories. He’s also scored three goals and played a key role in the Dutch’s 2-0 win over Chile yesterday to secure first place in their group, ahead of the south Americans.

Van Gaal takes over at Old Trafford after the World Cup is complete and his time as Netherlands head coach comes to an end. He has already been linked with a whole host of top European stars including Cesc Fabregas, Toni Kroos, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Arjen Robben.

Man United are set to raid the transfer market this summer and spend a lot of money – £200 million has been rumoured – with Robben one of the main men on the list.

“I think Louis wants him desperately to come to Manchester United,” said Roy, currently reserve team coach at Ajax.

“Bayern Munich is also a big club and he is very happy there but you never know. With football, everything is possible.”
