Louis van Gaal's contract details with Manchester United leaked

Will LVG remain at Old Trafford next season?

According to The Times, who have revealed the details of LVG’s contract with United, the Dutchman earns £8 million annually and United will have to pay £5 million if they wish to sack him. Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has endured a very difficult season as his side have crashed out of the Europa League and are close to missing out on Champions League football next season.

If the Red Devils do fail to qualify for Europe’s premier club competition, this will reportedly have repercussions for the Dutchman as he is set to lose out on more than £1m of his annual salary.

Just a week earlier, Van Gaal had stated that the Old Trafford club forced him into signing a three-year contract rather than what he preferred, which was a two-year deal.

Van Gaal had said, “We always knew that the process would take three years. I wanted to sign only for two years. The club wanted me to sign for three years, not me. I signed for three years -- so next year you will see me again.”

In their exclusive report, The Times broke down details of the 64-year old’s contract at United. Of his £8 million-a-year contract, image and loyalty rights clauses and performance related incentives account for more than half. The figures read £2 million loyalty payment, £1.6 million for image rights and £1.1 million for taking the red half of Manchester to the Champions League, which looks far fetched.

Only £3.3 million are reserved and guaranteed for basic pay.

The Dutchman is slated to receive a £400,000 bonus should United go on to win the FA Cup against Crystal Palace at Wembley on May 21. Albeit winning the Europa League would have fetched him the same amount of money, there is no bonus for reaching the FA Cup final.

Whereas if Van Gaal had managed to lead United to the Europa League final, he would have received a bonus amount of £200,000.

His contract further stipulated a bonus of £1.5 million if United had won the Champions League this season and a further £1.5 million if they had won the Premier League. Even if they finished runners-up in either of these competitions, he would have received £750,000 as an additional bonus.

He was also set to receive £200,000 if United had won the Capital One Cup. His payoff, should he be sacked at the end of the current campaign, permits him to receive 66 percent of his existing salary unless he is appointed elsewhere before June 2017, in which case his payment will cease.
