Luis Suarez scoops Player of the year award, credits LFC supporters

The Premier league’s leading goal scorer with 17 goals to his name, Luis suarez, has trumped the likes of Robin van Persie, Leighton Baines, Christian Benteke, Juan Mata and Pablo Zabaleta to win the Football Supporters Federation 2013 Player of the Year award. The Uruguayan received a huge endorsement in a poll that attracted more than 500,000 votes. Ironically he picked up the award at a glitzy ceremony at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, only six months after he was the subject of an audacious £40million transfer bid by the Gunners.

“It is a great honour for me to receive such a prestigious award from the fans”, he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

Suarez, currently one of the most sought after player in Europe due to his prolific goal scoring capabilities, admitted that his Liverpool career would have undoubtedly been over had the supporters not backed him at Anfield.

“This award is not just for me but for my team-mates, management and coaching staff, and for everyone connected with Liverpool Football Club.”

He highlighted his speech by thanking the Liverpool faithful for keeping faith in him after his past incidences with the club.

He said: “After so many difficult moments for me I was able to win the supporters back, and that was unbelievable when I came back to play.

“They helped me, and that was important for me, for my confidence, and for my family, because they are together with me in this.

“It’s very special for me (the award) because my hard work on the pitch is recognised.

“Everybody knows about my problems and my difficult year, but after that I forgot everything and have been able to get back on the pitch.

“Liverpool are starting to reach their potential and we can play our best on the pitch.

“It’s very important that we stay together, we keep going, this is very important.

The Reds currently sit second in the Premier league table, one place above their rivals, Chelsea on goal difference with 33 points from 16 games after trashing Tottenham 5-0 at the Lane.

Suarez, the Reds’ key man, indicates that the result of the intensive festive season of games including tough away matches towards the end of it would decide whether Liverpool can contend for the title or challenge for the top four spot come the year end.
