Luke Shaw to stay in Eindhoven hospital for observation after surgery

The young left-back suffered a double fracture of his right leg after a horrific tackle from PSV’s Hector Moreno

Manchester United have confirmed that Luke Shaw will remain in an Eindhoven hospital to continue his recovery after undergoing an operation on Tuesday night, according to the club’s official website.

The 20-year-old left-back suffered a double fracture of his right leg after going down under a hefty challenge from PSV Eindhoven defender Hector Moreno in Manchester United's opening Champions League group game. Shaw will have further surgery when he returns to Manchester. However, a decision was made to carry out an initial operation on Tuesday night shortly after the injury was sustained.

The England full-back was stretchered off in the first half of United's 2-1 Champions League defeat to PSV on Tuesday following a challenge from Hector Moreno. It was later confirmed that Shaw had suffered a double leg fracture and the former Southampton man underwent surgery later on after being taken to hospital.

However it is understood that Shaw's bone did not pierce the skin and therefore did not cause an infection, which should allow him to recover quicker. Shaw received treatment on the pitch for around nine minutes before being carried off on a stretcher and replaced by Marcos Rojo.

United have since released an update on the 20-year-old's condition and paid tribute to the care he is receiving in the Netherlands."Luke Shaw underwent surgery on his injury on Tuesday night and will remain in hospital in Eindhoven to continue his early recovery," read United’s official statement.

"Manchester United are grateful for the excellent care he is receiving and would like to thank everyone who has sent messages of support."

After his surgery, Shaw posted the following on Twitter:

Mata’s touching tribute for Shaw

The night saw Moreno turn into United’s pantomime villain as he pulled off a fatal challenge on Shaw and then came back to equalise for PSV. Moreno, however, appeared distraught after the challenge and since then has apologised for the same after the match, insisting the unfortunate contact with Shaw's leg was entirely accidental.

PSV recovered from Memphis Depay's goal on his return to Philips Stadion to secure a 2-1 win thanks to headers from Moreno and Luciano Narsingh.

Meanwhile, Juan Mata has sent a touching tribute to Luke Shaw on Instagram. The Spaniard, who was one of the players to immediately signal for medics to come on to the pitch, has taken to Instagram to post an old picture of Shaw in good spirits.
