Rumour: Manchester United revive William Carvalho pursuit after calling off Kroos deal

William Carvalho: Targeted to bolster Manchester United’s midfield

Manchester United are to step up their interest in William Carvalho once again according to the Daily Express, after their deal to bring Toni Kroos to the club from Bayern Munich fell apart.

The German midfielder had been heavily tipped to be Louis Van Gaal’s first major signing since taking charge of the club, before Van Gaal pulled the plug on Kroos joining United, citing he has not the kind of player he needed at the club.

Instead, Van Gaal has turned his attentions back to Carvalho in the hope of luring him to Old Trafford still, despite recent reports suggesting that he was to reject overtures from England to make the move to Monaco, with the French side willing to pay the £37.5million release clause in his contract.

United had been reluctant to pay the release fee and with Sporting Lisbon unwilling to lower their demands for the talented midfielder, a deal between the two clubs seemed unlikely.

However, Van Gaal has told senior members at the club that he is very keen to have the Portuguese international in his squad next season and has asked them to pay the fee required to land Carvalho, having made him a priority in his summer rebuild.
