According to Diario Gol, Lionel Messi's close friendship with Jordi Alba stopped Manchester United from signing the Spanish left-back earlier this season.
Manager Jose Mourinho is hellbent on signing a new left-back given Luke Shaw's lack of form and fitness and was keen to bring Alba to the club.
However, Alba has struck a close friendship with Messi since their time in Catalonia and the Argentine superstar advised Alba against the move.
Diario Gol reports that even if United comeback with another offer, Alba is unlikely to quit Barcelona as he wants to play with Messi for seasons to come.
Mourinho and Guardiola chasing Harrison
Manchester United and Manchester City are chasing the signature of England Under-21 star Jack Harrison, reports The Sun.
Harrison is a former United youth star where he played for the club from 2003-2010 and was a teammate for current United star Marcus Rashford.
Despite his United's ties, Harrison is tipped to sign for Man City as he is currently playing for New York City FC, which has close ties with Man City.
All the scouts watching Harrison claim that he is a late-developer who will shine in his coming years despite making little impact in his academy days.
