Man Utd 1-1 Southampton: Key stats and player ratings

Player ratings United soton

.

Man United drop points again at home, with Southampton being the latest team to leave Old Trafford with something. Man United took an early lead thanks to Robin van Persie, but as the game grew, Southampton gradually built on their momentum and grabbed a well deserved equaliser, thanks to Adam Lallana. Here are the player ratings, based on Squawka Performance Score.

Manchester United:

Goalkeeper: David De Gea – (1)

Relatively untroubled throughout the game, but let the equalising goal through his legs, which was a sloppy goal to concede.

Right-Back: Rafael (5)

The Brazilian was untroubled by the Saints attack and provided the overlap when needed. He also won all three of his tackles.

Rafael Tackles Won v Southampton

Left-Back: Patrice Evra (-5)

Had little to do throughout the game and like Rafeal, he won all three of his tackles.

Centre-Back: Phil Jones (22)

Helped Evans to deal with Osvaldo’s forays into the penalty area. He also made three interceptions.

Phil Jones Interceptions v Southampton

Centre-Back:Jonny Evans (22)

Coped ably with the presence of Osvaldo and then Lambert in the box as Southampton looked to utilise their aerial presence.

Centre-Midfield: Michael Carrick (22)

Extremely composed in possession as usual and controlled the midfield alongside Fellaini.

Michael Carrick Heat Map v Southampton

Centre-Midfield: Marouane Fellaini (16)

Provided a combative presence in a midfield battle against Lallana and Wanyama. He made five interceptions, more than any player for either side.

Marouane Fellaini Interceptions

Right-Wing: Nani (17)

Largely a passenger for United, he was subbed late on for Giggs. However, he did make three key passes.

Nani Key Passes v Soton

Right – Wing: Adnan Januzaj (-3)

His sensational pass put Rooney through on goal which helped United to take the lead. Besides that he did little else.

Attacking -Midfield: Wayne Rooney (-22)

Should have scored from Januzaj’s pass, but Van Persie was on hand to spare his blushes. Rooney attempted six crosses, with only one being accurate. Poor game by his standards.

Wayne Rooney Passes v Southampton

Striker: Robin van Persie (45)

A superb finish to give United an early lead but the Dutchman toiled away up front as United failed to capitalise on their lead. Van Persie did not create a chance today, meaning he has only created one chance all season in the Premier League.

Robin Van Persie goal

Subs:

Ryan Giggs (0)

On for Nani, he was asked to shore up the midfield in face of a late Southampton onslaught and did so ably.

Danny Welbeck (-10)

Replaced Fellaini, and perhaps should have grabbed the winner, but he didn’t have the pace to evade Schneiderlin. Welbeck only completed one pass during his time on the pitch too. Shocking.

Chris Smalling (6)

Had little chance to impress as he came on for Rooney in the final few minutes.

Southampton:

Goalkeeper: Artur Boruc (-5)

His heroics helped secure a point but could do nothing for Van Persie’s goal. Boruc made four saves in the game.

Right-Back: Nathaniel Clyne (-1)

Was caught up the field for the goal but put in a decent performance otherwise. He won all his tackles and as the Heat Map shows, he put in a great shift against Man United.

Clyne Heat Map v Man United

Left-Back: Luke Shaw (-1)

Tried to provide the width going forward but a toothless Southampton attack meant that his efforts were in vain. He did complete two of his five take-ons.

Centre-Back: Jose Fonte (-2)

He was all at sea as he lost Rooney for the first goal, not a good performance from the centre-back. But to his credit, he won all three of his aerial duels today.

Jose Fonte Duels Won

Centre-Back: Dejan Lovren (33)

Performed manfully and was one of Southampton’s standout performers, he played his role as Southampton got a much deserved goal.

Centre-Midfield: Steven Davis (6)

Maintained possession well in midfield with a 87% pass completion rate.

Centre-Midfield: Morgan Schneiderlin (24)

Another assured performance from the midfielder as he held the Saints midfield together. He won four of his six tackles.

Victor Wanyama (-5)

The midfield battler won all two of his tackles and did well with Schneiderlin.

Attacking Midfield: Adam Lallana (78)

Squawka’s man of the match and Southampton’s creative force, all of their best plays were channelled through Lallana. He created five chances, more than any player for either side.

Adam Lallana Chances Created

Striker: Jay Rodriguez (-22)

Did very little throughout and was replace by Lambert on the hour mark. He had two attempts, with one attempt on target.

Striker: Pablo Osvaldo (-14)

Proved a handful for United defenders but he never really threatened the goal.

Subs:

Ricky Lambert (-6)

On for the ineffectual Jay Rodriguez, he provided a different threat to the United defence. He also made two key passes.

James Ward-Prowse (38)

Replacing Steven Davis, the youngster added energy and guile going forward in the final stages. He completed 84% of his passes and made two key passes.

Guly do Prado (-2)

A last throw of the dice by Mauricio Pochettino, the Brazilian failed to make an impact in the dying stages of the match.
