Manchester United 1-0 FC Copenhagen: United player ratings as Maguire & Onana star in dramatic win | UEFA Champions League 2023-24

A second-half header from Harry Maguire helped Manchester United defeat FC Copenhagen 1-0 in their UEFA Champions League encounter on Tuesday (October 24).

Both sides showed plenty of industry but little creativity in an unspectacular yet evenly contested first half. Neither goalkeeper was tested as the two teams went into the half-time interval on level terms.

The game picked up speed after the restart as both sides began to show more intent to take the lead. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 72nd minute through Maguire, who headed United into the lead.

Erik ten Hag’s men spurned numerous opportunities to extend their advantage, only for the visitors to be awarded a penalty deep into injury time. However, Andre Onana saved Jordan Larsson’s spot-kick to secure the win for United.

Andre Onana saved a late penalty to help United seal the win.

Onana picked the perfect moment to deliver his best performance in a Manchester United shirt. The Cameroon international played a crucial role in the win, making four saves, including keeping the 97th-minute penalty out.

Diogo Dalot: 5/10

Dalot found his footing after a scratchy start to the game and carried the ball forward with confidence. The full-back made seven recoveries and four clearances as well.

Raphael Varane: 6/10

Varane delivered a classy performance in defense, completing the most passes (85) in the game. The Frenchman’s positioning was excellent throughout the game, keeping the FC Copenhagen attackers at bay.

Harry Maguire: 8/10

Maguire bagged the winner with an excellent header.

Maguire hit back at his critics by not only putting in a solid defensive display but also bagging the all-important winner.

Sergio Reguilon: 5/10

Reguilon enjoyed a positive return from injury, getting forward well from left-back in support of Rashford. The Spaniard was replaced shortly after the hour mark.

Sofyan Amrabat: 5/10

The deeper-lying of United’s two central midfielders, Amrabat formed an effective shield in front of his defense. The Moroccan was replaced by Eriksen at half-time.

Scott McTominay: 4/10

Despite a decent showing in midfield, McTominay conceded a penalty for the second game running to put his side in real jeopardy. The Scotsman also picked up a booking for the foul that led to the penalty.

Antony: 4.5/10

Although he was full of running, Antony offered little attacking output from the right wing. The Brazilian was replaced in the 63rd minute.

Bruno Fernandes: 5/10

A typical all-action display from Fernandes, who was involved in most of his side’s attacking play and often helped out in defense as well. The United skipper created four chances and was booked late in the second half.

Marcus Rashford: 4/10

Rashford’s touch and decision-making let him down on a few occasions as he put in an underwhelming performance.

Rasmus Hojlund: 5/10

Hojlund did a manful job of leading the line, using his physicality and pace to good effect. The Dane was replaced late on by Anthony Martial.

Christian Eriksen: 7/10

Brought on at half-time, Eriksen added some much-needed creativity to the United midfield. The Dane set up the winner with an excellent cross.

Victor Lindelof: 5/10

Lindelof slotted in seamlessly at left-back and helped United secure the win with a solid defensive display.

Alejandro Garnacho: 5/10

Garnacho was superb after coming on in the 63rd minute and caused the opposition defenders several problems. However, the Argentine winger missed a couple of extremely presentable chances to score.

On for the final few minutes, Martial barely got a touch of the ball.
