Manchester United are on the verge of roping in their fourth major recruit of the season with Angel di Maria set to arrive at Old Trafford from Real Madrid, according to reports.

The report suggests that the Red Devils have agreed to a fee of around £56 million with the European champions for the services of the left-footed winger.

The Argentine forward had expressed his desire to leave the Bernabeu in recent times and now it seems that he will get his wishes with United ready to loosen the purse strings to bring the talented Argentine to Old Trafford for a British record transfer fee.

Di Maria joined Real Madrid in 2010 from Portuguese side Benfica and went on to become one of the eminent stars at the Spanish capital. In his four seasons at the Bernabeu, Di Maria took to the field 124 times for the Spanish giants, scoring 22 goals and setting up many more.

He won the La Liga with Los Blancos in 2012 and the Champions League last season, where he put on a defining performance in the final against Atletico Madrid. Di Maria was also one of the most vital cogs in the machinery for his national side which reached the final of the World Cup earlier this year in Brazil.

Di Maria will mostly join next week

Eminent football journalist Guillem Balague reported about the deal last night, saying:

“At long last there is significant movement in the seemingly never ending, ‘Will he stay or will he go’ saga of Angel di Maria. It now looks certain that he will leave Real Madrid and become a Manchester United player. The final meetings will take place at the beginning of next week.

“United will pay between 60-70 million Euros (£48-55m) for the player. More than 60. A great deal for Madrid.

“I can exclusively reveal that, as we speak (Saturday night), football agent Jorge Mendes is on a flight from Singapore – where he has been putting to bed the purchase of Valencia by Peter Lim – to Europe, with a view to sealing the sale of Di Maria to United.

“So advanced, in fact, are the negotiations that it has already been agreed that Di Maria will wear the number seven shirt, worn in the past by no lesser players than David Beckham, Eric Cantona, Cristiano Ronaldo, George Best and Bryan Robson.”

Di Maria will be joining Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera and Marcos Rojo as new recruits this off-season at Old Trafford.
