In a move that was in stark contrast to the one-dimensional football Manchester United played last season under David Moyes, Young opened the scoring in the 21st minute.

The move included 20 passes.

Another angle of this goal:

Just 5 minutes later, young centre-back Michael Keane brought down Gareth Bale in the box.

The Welsh winger duly scored the resulting penalty.

Ashley Young scored his second to restore his club's lead in the 37th minute.

An injured Welbeck had to be replaced by Zaha in the 42nd minute.

Half Time.

United made three changes- Shaw, Blackett, Cleverley replacing Young, Evans and Herrera respectively.

Real Madrid replaced Xabi Alonso with De Thomas

On the hour mark, United brought on Lingard, Hernandez and Kagawa for Rooney, Valencia and Mata.

The loudest cheers of the night were reserved when United star Cristiano Ronaldo, who had earlier refused to rule out a move to his former club, came on in the 73rd minute but even he couldn’t rescue his team.

Javier Hernandez capped it off with a predatory finish off a great cross by Shinji Kagawa in the 80th minute.
