Smart move?

What’s the story?

The rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool might be set for a new chapter. The Red Devils are plotting a move for Liverpool's first team star and the Anfield side can't do anything to stop him from joining them!

Reports in Tuttosport today claim that Jose Mourinho is keen on signing Emre Can next summer. The German midfielder is in the final months of his contract at Liverpool and is stalling on a new deal.

In case you didn’t know...

Can's contract expires at the end of the season and despite opening negotiations over a new deal, he's yet to sign it. Reports suggest that the 23-year-old wants to 'checkout' his other options before deciding his future at Anfield.

The heart of the matter

Jose Mourinho is on the lookouts for a replacement for Michael Carrick and has set his sights on Emre Can. The German midfielder reportedly fits the bill perfectly for the former Chelsea manager and the fact that he will be coming in for free makes it even better for them.

Carrick signed a new one year deal at Old Trafford earlier this year but is expected to retire when the season ends. He hasn't been getting any game time and is at the club as an experienced backup player.

Apart from United, Juventus are also said to be keeping tabs on the German international. The Serie A champions have openly confirmed their interest in signing him and have also revealed that they had a bid rejected for him in the summer.

What’s next?

Liverpool are highly unlikely to sell him in January even though he might not sign a new contract. They are likely to keep the offer open for him until the season ends and hope that he stays at the club.

They have a replacement read in the shape of Naby Keita, who has already agreed to join the Reds at the start of the next season. Ben Woodburn is also an alternative and despite his qualities, Emre Can might not be a big miss at Anfield should he decide to leave.

Author’s Take

It's a very smart move by Manchester United to show interest in Emre Can this early. This will 'unsettle' him even more and make things worse for Liverpool.

With the chance of staying in the Premier League and also challenging for the titles, the German might actually consider moving to Old Trafford albeit he has been playing for Liverpool.
