What's the story?

Former Manchester United player Robin van Persie has shown his support for the club's current manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

In case you didn't know...

Solskjaer was appointed as the interim manager after the Red Devils sacked Jose Mourinho in December 2018. After a run of good games, the Norwegian was named the permanent manager of the club.

However, the club's good form did not last long. Eventually, they finished outside of the top four which means they would play in the Europa League next season.

The heart of the matter

The ex-United striker played for the Red Devils from 2012-2015. He was a prolific goalscorer for both Arsenal and United before he moved to Fenerbahce and later Feyenoord. Because of his goalscoring records, the 35-year-old has been considered one of the best strikers of his time.

Van Persie commented on the situation, saying that

"I think it's the perfect match, it's just they're having a bad spell."
"Back in the day it was normal for a manager to get time. Nowadays if you lose six games, you're out. Is that the solution?
"Give someone time, especially if it's a kid from the club."

The Dutchman added that,

"Everyone was screaming like, 'Give the guy a permanent deal'. And then since that permanent deal the luck went away a little bit; they've been losing more games than they want to."
"Everyone has that at a certain time. He had a fantastic first period - now the last 12 games have been tough. OK, but next season they have to pick themselves up and go again."

It is clear that van Persie believes Solskjaer is capable of picking the team up and bringing the club back to the standards when Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge.

What's next?

United are reportedly close to finalising the deal for their first signing of the summer, Daniel James, from Swansea City. The young Welsh is said to have agreed to personal terms with the Red Devils, and in a couple of days, the deal could be announced.
