Manchester United are ready to make Luke Shaw the most expensive teenager in the history of football as they prepare to submit a bid to Southampton worth £34 million.

That figure dwarfs the record fee which stands at £25 million when Manchester United brought Wayne Rooney to Old Trafford from Everton ten years ago.

Earlier Southampton had rejected a bid of £27 million but the Independent report that new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has been impressed by the Saints star and is adamant that the club need to sign him. The Dutchman has even apparently urged chief executive Ed Woodward to offer Shaw wages of up to £100,000 per week to tempt him to join Man United.

Southampton have grown accustomed to selling their big stars for a lot of money with the likes of Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain moving to Arsenal for considerable fees in recent years. Additionally, they could net a further £30 million from the potential sale of captain Adam Lallana to Liverpool.

Shaw is widely seen by many as the perfect replacement for Patrice Evra when the Frenchman eventually leaves Old Trafford. It had been expected that he would leave this summer but he signed a new one-year deal suggesting he would be around to tutor his replacement for one season. His present understudy Alex Buttner has already left the club.
