Manchester United have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Stefan de Vrij from Feyenoord, according to talkSPORT.

De Vrij is currently part of United manager Louis van Gaal’s Netherlands squad at the World Cup in Brazil. The 22-year-old has started all three of the Dutch team’s fixtures at the tournament, and he scored the third goal in their stunning 5-1 victory over defending champions Spain.

United have already been active in this summer’s transfer window, completing moves for both midfielder Ander Herrera and left-back Luke Shaw in recent days.

The Dutch defender was in talks with Lazio over a move to Serie A before the World Cup, but that deal fell through, allowing United to swoop. De Vrij has one year left on his contract at Feyenoord, and he is now set to move to Old Trafford for a fee of £8 million.

His arrival will address one of the issues in van Gaal’s squad, with the departures of both Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand this summer leaving the club short in central defence. Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, and Jonny Evans are the club’s current options at centre-back, though all three spent time on the sidelines with injury last season. United are also thought to be close to a deal for Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen.
